Even when they include them, gifted programs aren't serving Black and low-income kids - News

Even when they include them, gifted programs aren’t serving Black and low-income kids
After years of criticism for their lack of diversity, programs for high achievers may not be adequately serving their Black and low-income students, a new study shows.
“The potential benefits aren t equally distributed,” said lead author and University of Florida College of Education professor Christopher Redding, Ph.D., who evaluated data from gifted programs in elementary schools nationwide. “The conversation up to this point has been about access, with less emphasis on how students perform once in gifted programs.”
While academic achievement gains for students overall were modest going from the 78th to 80th percentile in reading and rising only a third as much in math  low-income and Black gifted students, on average, saw no achievement gains. Florida state lawmakers remain set on trying to gut a beloved higher education scholarship despite making some initial concessions and facing significant backlash from students and parents.
More than 110,000 college students received the merit-based Bright Futures scholarship in 2020, but that number might have been significantly reduced after Republican state Sen. Dennis Baxley introduced Senate Bill 86. His proposal initially said only students going into fields he believes would yield high-paying jobs could receive the award, which pays between 75 and 100 percent of in-state tuition at public and private universities. ....

Do school police make students feel safer?

Do school police make students feel safer?
Nationally, armed school resource officers (SROs) are part of many students’ daily experience. In Florida, state law even requires armed personnel in schools for the protection of students. Amid a national conversation on policing following the killing of George Floyd, though, how can policymakers also ensure students feel safe at school?
UF education professor and director of the Education Policy Research Center, F. Chris Curran, addresses this question by looking at how interactions with SROs predict students feelings of safety and likelihood of being disciplined in research to be published in the journal Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis. ....

P.K. Yonge opens new building that will be used to test new learning methods

Phillip Miller said he felt like he was walking into a spacious new home when he first walked into his 12th-grade classroom in a new three-story building on Wednesday at P. K. Yonge Developmental Research School.
“It was great,” he said. “It was like moving into a new home with the open concept from a home that had like a closed concept. You can see (other classes). I believe it will help me learn better because of the atmosphere. It’s more of a chilled, relaxed atmosphere. I don’t feel like I m being isolated.”
The new $21 million building has no hallways. ....
