Jewell Thompson, longtime Lake County volunteer, is a centenarian

Jewell Thompson has a love for serving
Jewell, who officially turns 100 Friday, said she has lived a very full and good life and is very proud of her three sons, David, Jerry and Jim, which she raised with her husband, Harley, in St. Louis, Missouri.
Jewell married Harley in 1941, on the brink of World War II. Harley was a Navy Seabee and was sent across seas on multiple occasions while Jewell “stayed home to keep the fire burning for the little ones.”
In 1952, Jewell began working for Southwestern Bell, later bought out by AT&T, as executive assistant to the District Manager of Training and Development. There, she was responsible for organizing the weeklong training program, “How to Manage People” for every union lineman. ....

Groveland veterans motorcycle club gives back to house fire victim

GROVELAND The NAM Knights Green Swamp motorcycle club has a mission to help veterans and law enforcement in their time of need.
So when the Groveland-based chapter got word that veteran and former officer Mike Whitaker’s house caught fire, they were ready to step in and help. The NAM Knights agreed to pay what insurance would not cover, which amounted to $500.
“Mike’s nephew is in our club up in New York and honestly, we were happy to help out a Vietnam veteran and former law enforcement officer,” President Tony “Ruff” Rufrano said. “It’s what we do.” ....

'Lucky to be alive': World War II veterans recall days of danger

Both veterans flew combat missions over the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion, June 6, 1944.
At Sun ‘n Fun, Hallett of Leesburg and Jenner, who lives in Orlando, shared some of their memories of their missions and service. Hallett was the featured guest on the satellite broadcast system television show “Florida Aviation Network,” recorded at the Sun ‘n Fun studio that promotes aviation and aviation history.
Prior to airing, Jenner said that during the war, he was a gunner on A-20 and B-17 bombers serving with the 452nd Operations Group. He said he ended up on the B-17 “Flying Fortress” after no more A-20s were available. ....
