March 2021 News in Brief | Vermont Business Magazine

Unemployment rate falls another tenth to 3.1 percent
The Vermont Department of Labor has reported that the seasonally-adjusted statewide unemployment rate for February was 3.1 percent. This reflects a decrease of one-tenth of one percentage point from the prior month’s revised estimate of 3.2 percent. The comparable United States rate in February was 6.2 percent, which was a decrease of one-tenth of one percentage point from the revised January estimate. The decline is largely due to a sharp decrease in the Labor Force from January. The number of unemployed also fell. Both the Labor Force and total Employed represent about 30,000 fewer workers than a year ago, which was pre-pandemic. ....

Vermont Considers Giving Communities More Say in Building Out Broadband

Tim Newcomb
Internet service was agonizingly slow when Ed and Elizabeth Childs moved into their rural Corinth home in 2012. Nearly a decade later, it s not much better. The couple pays $75 a month for DSL service over the copper wires of their local telephone company, but it s useless for many modern tasks.
Any kind of teleconferencing or uploading files is a real problem, Ed said. To upload video, even in a compressed format, you re talking hours and hours  even days.
So Ed, a retired electrical engineer, did two things. He joined the Space on Main in nearby Bradford, a coworking space where he has the high-speed internet connection he needs to develop a new business venture. And he joined the governing board of the East Central Vermont Telecommunications District, better known as ECFiber. ....

Can Once-Maligned Ranked-Choice Voting Make a Comeback in Burlington?

Sean Metcalf
When Burlington voters cast their Town Meeting Day ballots on or before March 2, they ll have the opportunity to resurrect a voting system that some residents had hoped was long dead.
Question 4 asks whether the city should change its charter to bring back ranked-choice voting, a system that allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. If no candidate receives a majority of votes, lesser-ranked choices come into play to determine a winner.
The measure would only apply to city council races and would need approval from the governor and legislature before it could go into effect in Burlington. It would first be used in the 2022 Town Meeting election. ....
