Cornerstone expects to launch French immersion program soon


“There have been more families asking for it,” said Little.
Currently, the only school in the division that offers French immersion is the Estevan Comprehensive School where students from Grades 9 to 12 can become engaged in the more complete program while others may work with Core French programming if desired.
In the past, families of elementary public school students in Estevan who wished to immerse their youngsters in French in the elementary system relied on the immersion program offered by Sacred Heart/Sacre Coeur School, a member of the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division that are ongoing scholastic partners with SECPSD. ....

Holy Family School Division approved for COVID-related funding


Chief financial officer Lisa Wonsiak said Holy Family had applied for about $2 million in funding, and were approved for $858,000 by the ministry.
In making the application for funding, education director Gwen Keith said they consulted with the staff of their schools first.
“With the deployment of resources, we listened to the staff to find out their concerns and where the needs are, and how we could support our staff through COVID,” she said.
Wonsiak noted that the application was first narrowed in its focus to $1.5 million, and for this round of funding, the ministry decided to provide funding to support remote learning, and for cleaning and sanitizing needs in the school facilities, including equipment and supplies needed for these areas. ....

Holy Family to stay at Level 2 for now


Level 3 is reduced in-class learning, where students go to class every other day, with half capacity in the building; and Level 4 is transition to alternative learning opportunities offered by the school division.
“When you listen to what’s happening, there is a bit of a trend to schools moving to higher levels. Prince Albert and Regina have gone to Level 4. At this point, it’s still being left to local school divisions to determine what level they want to go to,” said director of education Gwen Keith.
She added there’s always a possibility that the chief medical health officer might step in and mandate that school divisions are to go to a higher level. ....
