Unlike the usual thunderous celebrations, Thrissur Pooram will be like a mild drizzle this time. All rituals and events will be held. But they will not have any colour and fun without crazy pooram lovers.
COVID-19 has dampened its carnival spirit as people will not be allowed to the pooram venue. Lakhs of people will witness the pooram live on television channels. The famous 36-hour event will be reduced to a few hours of celebrations. Thissur Pooram was held as a ritual last year too. ....

A meeting of Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady Devaswom officials the two major organisers of Pooram festival convened by Thrissur district Collector here on Tuesday agreed to organise the festival without spectators.
Kerala s iconic Thrissur Pooram, considered as the festival of festivals in the state, will be held this week without people s participation, considering the surge in COVID-19 cases in the southern state, officials said here on Tuesday. A decision in this regard was taken by the state government on Monday.

Devaswoms allege bid to sabotage festival, naysayers cite crowd-control as a major worry
The surge in cases in the second wave of COVID-19 has cast a shadow over Thrissur Pooram.
The test positivity rate in Thrissur has been increasing rapidly. The current rate has crossed 20% and 1,780 cases reported on a single day on Sunday. The rate, which had gone above 22% in October and November last year, was brought to 1.7% by the end of March this year.
“The rate has been increasing very fast in the district. Violation of COVID-19 protocols during the election campaign contributed to the spike. Unlike during the first wave, this time, many of the COVID-19 patients developed breathlessness and had to be admitted in the ICU or put under ventilator support,” said DMO K.J Reena. ....
