Minimalistic celebrations necessitated by pandemic take the sheen off fete
There were all the usual rituals and events. There were caparisoned elephants, though in limited numbers. Sought-after maestros led the percussion ensembles too. But without the hysteric crowd, revelry, and street vendors, Thrissur Pooram missed its carnivalesque mood.
With their hearts in Thekkinkadu Maidan, pooram lovers on Friday sat at home glued to television screens. This year’s pooram created history by conducting the celebrations without people. COVID-19 spoiled the pooram last year too; there were no festivities or events then.

Unlike the usual thunderous celebrations, Thrissur Pooram will be like a mild drizzle this time. All rituals and events will be held. But they will not have any colour and fun without crazy pooram lovers.
COVID-19 has dampened its carnival spirit as people will not be allowed to the pooram venue. Lakhs of people will witness the pooram live on television channels. The famous 36-hour event will be reduced to a few hours of celebrations. Thissur Pooram was held as a ritual last year too.

Kerala s iconic Thrissur Pooram, considered as the festival of festivals in the state, will be held this week without people s participation, considering the surge in COVID-19 cases in the southern state, officials said here on Tuesday. A decision in this regard was taken by the state government on Monday.
