PTI Ahead of sowing of kharif (summer) crops, the government s premier agri-research body ICAR has come out with an advisory to help farmers overcome the impact of the second wave of the pandemic on farm production and their income. During 2021-22, second wave of COVID-19 pandemic is again posing a serious problem to the nation, halting economic activities in one way or the other. The resultant actions may impact agricultural production and consequently national food and nutrition security, said the 400 page advisory prepared by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). ....
Warehousing industry needs a makeover × To stem the wastage of harvested crop, warehouses need to scale up capacity, modernise and be manned by skilled personnel Foodgrains production in India has come a long way, from a consistent net deficit situation in pre-Green Revolution times to one of surplus in the last few years. However, this increase had brought along the greater challenge of efficient storage. It is estimated that wastage due to unscientific processes alone could amount to half of the total wastage of 14 million tonnes (mt) of foodgrains during post-harvest storage. Scientific storage involves ensuring proper packaging and quality certification of the inward materials, maintenance of humidity and temperature in the warehouse adjusted to the storable life of the goods to minimise damage due to pest/diseases or the natural decay process and consistent surveillance of stored items. ....

Productive orchards are being removed in California’s Central Valley, as farmers cope with severe water shortages prompted by drought and water-system limitations. One Fresno County farmer says he’s pulling out almost 400 acres of almond trees. Federal and state water projects say they will provide little to no irrigation water to many agricultural customers, so farmers must calculate how much food they can grow with limited supplies.
