As the Biden administration considers federal resources for coal workers and their communities, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) and the Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) urge a set of comprehensive supports estimated to cost between $33 billion over 25 years to $83 billion over 15 years. The analysis, Supporting the Nation’s Coal Workers and Communities in a Changing Energy Landscape, underscores that a fair and equitable shift to a low-carbon economy requires intentional, robust, and sustained investments in coal workers, their families, and their communities.

DTE Energy Co. and Consumers Energy Co. jointly announced support Tuesday for raising the cap on the amount of rooftop solar power the two utility companies can purchase from customers with solar panels on the roofs of their homes and businesses.
Under Michigan s 2016 energy law, DTE and Consumers are only required to purchase up to 1 percent of the state s average peak load of electricity from customers with rooftop solar installations.
The law created specialized pricing for Consumers and DTE to buy electricity from the owner of rooftop solar panels on sunny days when those panels are generating more electricity than is needed to power a single home. ....

As climate advocates, we support the shift away from coal and toward cleaner forms of energy, pointing out the reasons that we need to accelerate that trend. While the move away from coal helps reduce heat trapping emissions and improves public health, the closure of coal mines and coal-fired power plants often leave economic upheaval in their wake.
Just take a look at Adams County, Ohio, which in 2018 faced the closure of two coal-fired power plants, by far the largest employer in the county. DTE Energy and Consumers Energy announced together Tuesday their support for raising but not eliminating the cap on rooftop solar, a move that would increase the amount of solar power the utilities can purchase from consumers with rooftop solar panels.
Since 2016, under a state energy law there has been a 1% cap on how much solar power DTE and Consumers may purchase based on the utilities average peak load for the past five years.
“We’re all-in on solar energy,” Brandon Hofmeister, senior vice president of governmental, regulatory and public affairs at Consumers Energy said in a statement Tuesday. “Together, we’re proposing a more inclusive solution to raise the cap on solar that prioritizes the needs of every customer in Michigan. ....
