“Standing by the lake,” Hodge recalled, “I saw a duck and her ducklings swimming along the shore almost in front of me. Suddenly, a loon surfaced and the duck swam toward the loon, making a valiant effort to protect her young. I was very worried for the duck, being significantly outsized by the long-beaked loon, but then a much greater threat arose.
