BOSTON - Monday, April 19, 2021 - Mayor Kim Janey today announced that she has appointed Reverend Mariama White-Hammond as Chief of Environment, Energy, and Open Space for the City of Boston. In this role, Rev. White-Hammond will be responsible for leading the Cabinet in achieving its mission of enhancing environmental justice and quality of life in Boston by protecting air, water, climate, and land resources, as well as preserving and improving the integrity of Boston s architectural and historic resources. The Reverend will assume the role previously held by Chris Cook, who has been named the next Executive Director of The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy. ....

Boston Mayor Kim Janey has tapped Reverend Mariama White-Hammond to become the city s chief of environment, energy and open space.
White-Hammond is the founding pastor of New Roots AME Church in Dorchester and a fellow with the Green Justice Coalition. In a statement, Janey praised her for her work connecting ecology, immigration, climate change, energy policy and environmental justice.

“Climate change is a slow-motion disaster for some, and a not-so-slow disaster for what we call ‘frontline’ communities the most vulnerable people and places who have most often contributed the least in terms of emissions that are exacerbating the greenhouse effect,” says Madeleine Scammell, associate professor of environmental health.
Scammell is, increasingly, studying heat in these communities, from Nicaragua to Chelsea, Mass.
It began in 2008 with her research into an ongoing and still not explained epidemic of chronic kidney disease in Central America that has killed thousands of young- and middle-aged men, most of them agricultural sugarcane workers. ....
