Underwater glue made from silk can cling to surfaces like a barnacle

A non-toxic underwater glue that is inspired by barnacles and made from silk is stronger than most synthetic adhesives.
Barnacles and mussels use a clever combination of factors to stick to rocks or to the side of boats. In particular, they layer protein filaments into a cement-like structure that is cross-linked for extra strength. These filaments – called byssus – form into polymers on the surface the shellfish wants to cling to. In nature, they are then strengthened by iron-containing complex molecules.
Fiorenzo Omenetto at Tufts University in Massachusetts and his colleagues sought to replicate that using silk from silk worms. ....

IMC announced its new office bearers for 2021-2022. Juzar Khorakiwala is President-elect and Anant Singhania is Vice President-elect of IMC for 2021-22.
Khorakiwala will take over at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Chamber to be held in August 2021 when current President Rajiv Podar will hand over the charge after completing his distinguished one-year term. Khorakiwala, Chairman and Managing Director, Biostadt India Ltd. said, “I am excited to begin my journey as President of the IMC this year. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia could be home to several superspreading, local SARS-CoV-2 variants that are slipping off the health authorities radar.
According to virologists, while the Health Ministry was focusing on imported variants of concern (VoC), especially the dreaded B1617 from India, unidentified local strains could be fuelling the current wave of infections.
Professor Dr Sazaly Abu Bakar, who heads Universiti Malaya s Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre, said the facility identified two potential local strains recently.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Right now, the VoC is the Indian double mutant, but it is likely that a new variant is fuelling this current outbreak, Sazaly said. ....

Dispute led to dairy owner's murder in Gurgaon, two held | Gurgaon News


Gurgaon: Two men were arrested on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in the murder of a 24-year-old dairy owner on New Railway Road.
The crime took place on February 22 and the deceased was identified as Manish, a resident of Basai who along with his dairy business ran a tempo on New Railway Road, police said.
According to Manish’s father Budhraj, the duo were planning to go to Sadar Bazar on February 22 to purchase a container and some cattle food.
“Manish dropped me near a temple at Feroz Gandhi Colony on his two-wheeler and went to bring his friend Shivjeet’s SUV,” said Budhraj adding that Manish was about to start the SUV when two youths came near him and fired indiscriminately. “Hearing gunshots, I ran towards Shivjeet’s house and spotted two youths, who were wearing masks, running towards the main road,” said Budhraj adding that he found his son lying in a pool of blood inside the car. ....
