Citywide weatherization of apartment units may soon become a reality for Burlington tenants. Burlington City Council unanimously approved an ordinance that would require city landlords to insulate their rental units on Monday night. Under the city s revamped energy efficiency standards, property managers would be mandated to address weatherization through air sealing, upgrading heating systems, replacing draft windows and doors, or insulating walls and attics in their properties. The ordinance comes as an effort to meet Burlington s Net Zero Energy by 2030 goal as well as address high utility costs for city renters. According to the Vermont Department of Health, weatherization reduces energy cost and usage, improves housing conditions, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and increases resilience to climate change impacts. ....
Energy efficiency, sustainable design The 2020 Vermont s Greenest Building Awards, which announced its winners at the end of last month, spotlights some of the latest residential and commercial buildings that excel at energy efficiency and sustainable design features for water, health, transportation and affordability. The winning projects were selected by the Vermont Green Building Network, which recognized some of the state s most innovative and creative feats in green design in recent years. All projects entered into the contest are in Vermont and have at least a year of utility data showcasing that it can operate at a sustainable rate. Among the awards for the contest includes Vermont s Greenest Building, which goes to the highest scoring green building in Vermont incorporating low energy-use, and the Net Zero Award ....

Vermont Green Building Network’s (VGBN) ninth annual Vermont’s Greenest Building Awards Competition is now open for submissions. This statewide competition recognizes exemplary residential and commercial buildings that excel in green building strategies – including water, health, transportation, and affordability – and meet the highest standard of demonstrated energy performance. Submissions are due on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at 5 p.m. EST. Winners of the awards will be announced and showcased at VGBN’s annual Vermont Green Building Celebration this spring.
