Study explores individual differences of SARS-CoV-2 infection in ACE2-expressing stem cells

Study explores individual differences of SARS-CoV-2 infection in ACE2-expressing stem cells
The clinical phenotype of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is remarkable for its wide range of severity among individual patients. Genetic variations are known to mediate part of these differences.
To examine these differences, researchers in a new study used human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from different genetically diverse individuals. These cells are used to model genetic disease since they contain the donor’s genetic information.
The study, published as a preprint on the
bioRxiv server, uses a panel of iPSCs from over 500 individuals. The researchers preferred undifferentiated iPSCs to reduce the time required to differentiate them, especially since infection is not always reliable. ....

Canadian pilot study uses gene therapy to successfully treat patients with Fabry disease

Canadian pilot study uses gene therapy to successfully treat patients with Fabry disease
Results of a world-first Canadian pilot study on patients treated with gene therapy for Fabry disease show that the treatment is working and safe.
The Canadian research team was the first to use gene therapy in 2017 to treat patients with Fabry disease, a rare, chronic illness that can damage major organs and shorten lives. They report their findings today in the journal
Nature Communications.
Being one of the first people in the world to receive this treatment, and seeing how much better I felt afterward, it definitely gives me hope that this can help many other Fabry patients and potentially those with other single gene mutation disorders, says Ryan Deveau, one of the participating patients in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Now that I don t have to get the replacement therapy every two weeks, I have more time to spend with my family. ....

Research predicts which mammal species can spread SARS-CoV-2

Scientists worldwide are fighting to contain the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has already claimed more than 2.48 million lives. Preventing spillback infections is essential to containing the pandemic. To do so, it is vital to understand the nature of the virus, i.e., its susceptibility to a range of hosts. ....
