2 Tone Records began in a Coventry flat in 1979 and peaked two years later, when the Specialsâ era-defining Ghost Town went to No 1 as riots blazed around a UK in recession. The label launched the Specials and the Selecter from the current City of Culture, plus Londoners Madness, Birminghamâs the Beat and others, all to chart success, but also ended up naming an entire movement: dance crazy, sharp-suited, political, multi-racial ska-pop that reverberates to this day.
As a major two-tone exhibition comes to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in Coventry, the Guardian spoke to the people who were at the centre of a multicultural revolution.
SKA DREAM a ska reworking of his 2020 album
This complete re-recording was made as a fun band activity during coronavirus lockdowns. The band members live in different cities, so it was put together remotely through file-sharing. The album was produced by Jack Shirley and includes nods to Our Time by the Suicide Machines and Nite Klub by the Specials.
An announcement from the band says, As with most things ska in my life, what started out as a fun goof with friends eventually morphed into
Hey, what if we tried to make it good though? All of us have a pretty deep history playing and touring the country in punk/ska bands. We all understand the stigma that comes along with ska, we ve all dealt with the pitfalls of it, and we ve all kept on truckin regardless.

While Mark Markz character was pretty well defined in the main Black Hammer series, I don’t think anyone expected that his own miniseries exploring his past would focus so much on the events and ideas here as it does. Which is good, because this is a key defining point of the character and Brombal And Lemire are bringing it to life in all the harsh ways it has to. Markz has managed to exist above so much for so long but hasn’t really felt the weight of who he is himself, and coming to that in the 80s amid everything
