New Linwood pool on track for end-of-year opening

It will also have community meeting rooms and a kitchen.
The Christchurch City Council is already recruiting managers for the new pool and will advertise for workers, lifeguards, fitness instructors and customer service workers in May and June.
“Work on the facility is progressing really well and we’re on track to have it open later this year,’’ the council’s head of recreation, sports and events, Nigel Cox, said.
Groups wanting to book space at the pool could now email the council to express interest, he said. Times for Swimssmart swimming lessons would also be released later this year. ....

History of flooding in Lower Lea Valley in East London | East London and West Essex Guardian Series

Those of us who live in the Lower Lea Valley have experienced some relatively extreme weather in recent months, but unlike in previous centuries this has not caused the River Lea to burst its banks and inundate us with water. Historical records show that in bygone years the Lower Lea Valley was susceptible to frequent major floods, due to the character of its landscape and because flooding is a natural occurrence for the River Lea.

Luke Howard (1772-1864) the ‘Father of Meteorology’ who lived at Bruce Grove in Tottenham, recorded that in January 1809, following prolonged heavy snow and then a rapid thaw and heavy rain: ‘The River Lea…channels by which it intersects this part of the country were united in one current above a mile in width which flowed with great impetuosity and did much damage…filled to the depth of eight or nine feet’ and the Lower Lea Valley was flooded for a month. Again in May 1824 ....

Whatever direction snowstorms come from, they often seem to peter out before reaching Cambridgeshire. I savour the rare occurrence of a significant dollop of snow. A few years ago, I was able to enjoy the aftermath of one such occasion when running along an ancient track known as the Mare Way. This follows a ridge above the villages of Little and Great Eversden. The extensive views towards Cambridge on one side and Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire on the other were accentuated by hoar frost-encrusted trees and waves of white fields. Mesmeric. Still waiting for that magic combo to happen again! ....
