Journal Staff NEGAUNEE The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy as well as the Marquette County Health Department, will sample a select group of private drinking water wells surrounding the former Marquette County Airport in Negaunee Township for the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. PFAS chemicals can be present in groundwater and the environment as they are used to manufacture many products in everyday use, said MCHD, which indicated there is currently no evidence of PFAS chemicals in the groundwater within the area of concern. However, PFAS is a component of aircraft firefighting foam known as aqueous film forming foam, which may have been discharged during training and maintenance exercises at the former airport while it was in operation. ....
ABC 10/CW5 Officials are calling a building in Negaunee Township a total loss following a structure fire on Thursday. The fire at Superior Auto Parts on U.S. 41 did not result in any injuries. Firefighters from across Marquette County were on the scene for nearly 6 hours. The building involved contained several vehicles, parts and supplies in several different work areas. The fire caused brief traffic delays on U.S. 41. Snowfield road was also closed for several hours. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. ....

The building was a complete loss and the cause of the fire remained undetermined and under investigation as of Friday, officials said. Negaunee Township Fire Chief Jeff Kontio’s alarm sounded at 2:23 p.m Thursday, calling his firefighting crew to Superior Auto Sales and Rental in response to a fire that had erupted in a building located in the back of the property. It started Thursday around 2:30 p.m. at Superior Auto Parts on US-41. A number of fire trucks battled flames and smoke in a garage at the business for more than five hours.
