The Toyota Research Institute announced it has expanded its collaborative research program to include an additional 13 universities. Over the next five years, Toyota will invest more than $75 million in these academic institutions to develop artificial intelligence, robotics, and automated driving technologies.
The 13 universities join Stanford, MIT, and the University of Michigan, all three of which have been working with TRI over the last five years “to expand the body of research into artificial intelligence.” Toyota’s ultimate goal? As the automaker puts it, to amplify the human experience.
Indeed, “automaker” is now a fairly large understatement. Toyota, like many other top manufacturers, is well on the way to becoming a big tech company. TOKYO (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp unveiled its Woven Planet research unit at a virtual media event on Friday, promising to deliver the world’s “safest mobility” as competition heats up to develop self-driving and connected cars.
In the online presentation, dubbed “The Genesis”, Woven Planet executives provided few hints into specific features in the pipeline, but said a new assisted-driving system would be mounted on the company’s passenger cars by the end of this year. ....

TOKYO Woven Planet, Toyota s high-tech spinoff, has established a $800 million investment fund to cherry pick up-and-coming technology companies around the world.
The fund, named Woven Capital, was outlined Jan. 29 in a kickoff event for the Woven Planet venture that included an overview of the new company s upcoming products and strategies. Among the announcements was the Feb. 23 groundbreaking for its Woven City town of tomorrow.
James Kuffner, the American CEO of Woven Capital and a director at Toyota Motor, outlined the company s ambitions in an online briefing from Woven s headquarters in downtown Tokyo. ....
