Students rally for full divestment commitment from NU Board of Regents

Joined together near the Broyhill Fountain, students urged University of Nebraska administrators to commit to full divestment. Aila Ganic and Madison Whitney, Sustain UNL’s president and vice president, respectively, and Divest NU organizers, presented three demands to the university. These include a call on the NU Board of Regents to commit to full divestment of its controlled funds by its August meeting, pass a resolution calling on the NU Foundation to fully divest by the end of the year and create a university-wide working group — that would include students — dedicated to the implementation of divestment and reinvestment in clean energy.

UNL organizations try to alleviate stress in a no-break semester

Instead of having the opportunity to take a few days off from classes to simply relax and enjoy the spring air, students have had to endure the semester without any breaks.  In an effort to compensate for the lack of a spring break, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Big Red Resilience & Well-being held a Spring Breakout festival on March 29 where students had a few hours to enjoy a festival at the Nebraska Union Plaza.  Although some people were able to attend the event and relax for a while, other students did not have the opportunity to be there. Classes were not canceled that day, so students would not have been able to attend if they had class at that time.

Earthstock promotes sustainability with movies, clothing swap, concert

April 22 will mark the 51st annual Earth Day. As weather warms and plants bloom here in Nebraska, organizations all over the world will be celebrating the day in support for environmental protection, and several clubs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have come together to do the same. Each year, the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska puts on Earthstock, a month-long event to celebrate Earth Day and raise awareness for sustainable living. ASUN partnered with the University Program Council and Sustain UNL to create a month of eco-friendly events. ASUN’s Environmental Sustainability Committee chair and senior computer science and economics double major Rohan Thakker said Earthstock is a chance for UNL students to engage with the eco-friendly groups on campus and learn helpful environmental practices.
