Plastics Can Be Broken Down in to Fuel, And We Just Found a Great Method For It

Plastics Can Be Broken Down in to Fuel, And We Just Found a Great Method For It
23 APRIL 2021
If you didn t know already, we have bad news - the plastic recycling industry is severely under-performing. Only 9 percent of plastic waste ever produced has been recycled. Around 12 percent has been burnt, leaving 79 percent of all plastic ever produced still out there in the world.

While we work out how to be less reliant on these materials, researchers have also been investigating how to reuse one of the most common types of plastic – polyolefin – by turning it into fuel.
Single-use plastics impose an enormous environmental threat, but their recycling, especially of polyolefins, has been proven challenging, researchers from the University of Delaware (UD) write in a new paper. ....

Adidas's Terrex Futurecraft.Loop Anorak Is a Recyclable Jacket

To revist this article, visit My Profile, then View saved stories.
At the beginning of February, a large box from Germany arrived at my home in Brooklyn. Inside I found a futuristic, quilted polyester hooded jacket in pure white. “That would go really well at a winter rave,” my husband said when I slipped it over my head. With its sharp angles and preponderance of straps, it looked like something issued to the residents of a colony on Mars to wear on their weekends off from working the potato greenhouse.
This was the Terrex Futurecraft.Loop Anorak by Adidas, a prototype of a performance jacket that the brand says will be released in 2022. Like the Futurecraft.Loop sneaker before it, the anorak is both made of recycled material and is expressly designed to be sent back to Adidas at the end of its life for recycling. Or in my case, the end of six weeks of testing. ....

New Technique Could Turn Plastic Back Into Oil

Photo: Spencer Platt (Getty Images)
There is way too much plastic in the world and we’re making more every day, even as we struggle to find a way to get rid of the old stuff. A new study poses an interesting solution: Melting plastic bags and bottles back into the oil it was originally made from.

The new research, published Wednesday in Science Advances, looks at a technique called pyrolysis, which essentially melts down polyolefin into its original form aka oil and gas. Polyolefins are a very common type of plastic in everyday items from drinking straws to packaging to thermal underwear to plastic cling wrap. It accounts for two-thirds of the world’s plastic demand. The production of these kinds of plastics has been a huge boon for the oil and gas industry, and is giving fossil fuel producers a glimmer of hope for the future; while plastics only account for 14% of oil demand today, they’re projected to make up half the world’s demand for oil by 2 ....
