by Alice Stroud in GNRII on June 04, 2021 What is the first image that comes to your mind when asked about the lungs of the planet? Forests? Nope – think blue… something that covers 70% of the planet: the ocean! Oceans are a major carbon storage system for carbon dioxide (CO2), absorb about 30% of CO2 produced by human activities, and release at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen in the atmosphere. The ocean is home to most of Earth’s biodiversity. However, human activities are threatening fragile marine ecosystems. Threats to oceans include climate change, which is making oceans hotter and more acidic, pollution (in particular plastic pollution), and overfishing. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing activities are responsible for the loss of up to 26 million tons of fish each year, which is estimated to have an economic value of USD $10-23 billion. ....
by Born Free USA in GNRII on June 04, 2021 Born Free USA joins the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) in celebrating World Environment Day 2021 on Saturday, June 5. This year’s World Environment Day theme is “Ecosystem Restoration” and the UN will use the opportunity to launch the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Born Free USA supports World Environment Day 2021’s theme of “Ecosystem Restoration” because it is a guiding principle for Born Free’s Global Nature Recovery Investment Initiative (GNRII). Will Travers, co-Founder and Executive President of Born Free Foundation in the UK, says, “The prime objective of the GNRII is to make sure nature is heard, valued, recognized, prioritized, and loved as it should be. Through this initiative, we aim to amplify the knowledge and science that lays out how we need to change to ensure nature can recover fully. The priorities of our natural world must be what drives our economic growth.” ....
by Born Free USA in GNRII on May 21, 2021 Before COVID-19, world leaders and climate activists declared 2020 a “super year for nature” with vital international negotiations scheduled on the biodiversity and climate crises. As the pandemic spread, these negotiations were postponed to 2021, and we are now gearing up for a series of landmark meetings that, together, will set the international policy agenda on climate change and nature for decades to come. Born Free, a global leader in wildlife conservation and wild animal welfare, is working to make 2021 an exceptional year – a year of great ambition and opportunity to drive better outcomes for wild animals and people alike. ....
Global Support to Protect at Least 30 Percent of the Ocean In 2021, the parties to the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) are expected to adopt a new 10-year global biodiversity framework with goals and targets for ocean protection. In support of a growing call to protect and conserve 30% of the ocean by 2030, on Jan. 12 an informal coalition of nongovernmental and other civil society organizations shared with representatives from CBD a statement calling for a robust global biodiversity framework that will safeguard our ocean ecosystems for the long-term benefit of communities, fishers, biodiversity, and Earth’s climate. ....
