Born Free Urges G7 Leaders to Prioritize Nature s Recovery for the Future of all Life on Earth

by Born Free USA in GNRII on June 09, 2021 Born Free is urging G7 leaders to focus on biodiversity protection and recovery at the upcoming summit, due to take place in Carbis Bay, Cornwall, on June 11-13. In a letter to Boris Johnson and other G7 leaders, Born Free’s co-founder and President, Will Travers OBE, highlighted the crisis facing the natural world as a result of destructive human activities, and emphasized that if the degradation and exploitation of nature and wildlife is allowed to continue, ecosystems will collapse with catastrophic consequences, for the natural world and humanity alike. Will Travers said, “Experts tell us that it’s not too late to halt and reverse the decline in biodiversity, although to do this, transformative changes to our relationship with nature are urgently required. Bold decisions must therefore be taken, at local, national, regional, and global levels, in order to mainstream biodiversity protection across all areas of policy, and prov

Highlighting the Importance of Healthy Marine Ecosystems on World Oceans Day

by Alice Stroud in GNRII on June 04, 2021 What is the first image that comes to your mind when asked about the lungs of the planet? Forests? Nope – think blue… something that covers 70% of the planet: the ocean! Oceans are a major carbon storage system for carbon dioxide (CO2), absorb about 30% of CO2 produced by human activities, and release at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen in the atmosphere. The ocean is home to most of Earth’s biodiversity. However, human activities are threatening fragile marine ecosystems. Threats to oceans include climate change, which is making oceans hotter and more acidic, pollution (in particular plastic pollution), and overfishing. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing activities are responsible for the loss of up to 26 million tons of fish each year, which is estimated to have an economic value of USD $10-23 billion.

World Environment Day: Reimagine, Recreate, Restore

by Born Free USA in GNRII on June 04, 2021 Born Free USA joins the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) in celebrating World Environment Day 2021 on Saturday, June 5. This year’s World Environment Day theme is “Ecosystem Restoration” and the UN will use the opportunity to launch the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Born Free USA supports World Environment Day 2021’s theme of “Ecosystem Restoration” because it is a guiding principle for Born Free’s Global Nature Recovery Investment Initiative (GNRII). Will Travers, co-Founder and Executive President of Born Free Foundation in the UK, says, “The prime objective of the GNRII is to make sure nature is heard, valued, recognized, prioritized, and loved as it should be. Through this initiative, we aim to amplify the knowledge and science that lays out how we need to change to ensure nature can recover fully. The priorities of our natural world must be what drives our economic growth.”
