Blue Jackets sign D Mikko Lehtonen after Zach Werenski extension Field Level Media 31 Jul 2021, 06:05 GMT+10 The Columbus Blue Jackets continued building their 2021-22 roster, signing defenseman Mikko Lehtonen to a one-year deal on Friday. The move came less than 24 hours after the Blue Jackets locked up fellow defenseman Zach Werenski with a six-year, $57.5 million contract extension through the 2027-28 season. Contract terms for Lehtonen were not announced. Lehtonen, a 27-year-old from Finland, made his NHL debut last season and had six assists as he split time between the Blue Jackets and Toronto Maple Leafs. Columbus acquired him in a trade on March 12 that sent goaltender Veini Vehvilainen to Toronto. ....
July 30, 2021 GMT COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) The Columbus Blue Jackets signed defenseman Zach Werenski to a six-year, $57.5 million contract extension Thursday through the 2027-28 season, The 24-year-old Werenski, from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and the University of Michigan, has 65 goals and 124 assists in 335 career NHL games, all with the Blue Jackets. He has four goals and nine assists in 29 playoff games. “The city of Columbus has been so good to me, it’s close to home and my family and as I thought about it, it was really a no-brainer,” Werenski said in a statement. “I’m a Blue Jacket. I want to continue to be a Blue Jacket and do everything I can to bring a Stanley Cup here.” ....

Werenski, 24, has registered 65 goals, 124 assists and a +13 plus/minus rating in 335 NHL games. Since making his debut with Columbus in 2016, Werenski ranks tied for third among NHL blueliners in goals and 19th in points. He is the club’s all-time leader in goals by a defenseman, while ranking second in points and fourth in assists. ....
