Melissa Aldana signs with Blue Note, works on new album

By Adam Feibel

Grammy-nominated saxophonist and composer Melissa Aldana is the latest addition to Blue Note Records’ prestigious roster.
The record label announced that Aldana will be heading into the studio later this month to record her Blue Note debut, with plans for a release in early 2022.
“It feels unreal that I was signed to Blue Note,” says Aldana. “There’s so much Blue Note music I’ve checked out through the years that influenced me and gave me a sense of direction. It helped me figure out how I wanted to sound and what speaks to me, musically. I feel extremely honoured to be a part of the label and a part of the legacy. It means so much to me.” ....

These release on vinyl will brighten winter's coldest months

Here are few new music releases on vinyl that I am looking forward to this year.
This is the fifth year of Rhino Records’ Start Your Ear Off Right program, which is designed to enliven the dull music month of January with several LP releases each week. Most of the releases are reissues or have never been available on LP before.
So far this month, the program has released music from The Cars, Talking Heads, k.d. lang, and Norah Jones with Billie Joe Armstrong.
The releases set for Friday, Jan. 22, are two titles by Genesis, Dire Straits’ entire catalog sans the live record and “Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968.” ....

Earlier this week, on December 14, the jazz world marked what would have been the 10oth birthday of trumpeter Clark Terry if he had not passed away in 2015. Through his long career, Terry exhibited both musical talent and the kind of class that was hard to resist whether he stood in front of his own big band or the Tonight Show Orchestra or helping the development of young musicians on their way to fame as was the case with singer Dianne Reeves who he heard performing with her high school band during a convention performance in Chicago.
Terry invited the young Denver singer to sing with him and before too long, she was recording for Blue Note Record and picking up Grammy Awards with great regularity on her way to 2018 recognition as an NEA Jazz Master.  In addition to Reeves, Terry also has ties to another Denverite, trumpeter Bob Montgomery, who played with Terry’s big band and appeared in the Terry documentary, ....

An Upper Darby man has been indicted on 29 child pornography offenses after allegedly luring young boys into sex acts using online games. Geoffrey Hines, 34, made his initial appearance in federal court Friday in front of United States Magistrate Court Judge Richard Lloret, who ordered him detained pending trial. First Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams said the indictment charges Hines with multiple counts each of enticing a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct, manufacturing and attempting to manufacture child pornography, and possession of child pornography. According to court documents, for at least five years, the defendant preyed on young boys over their online games like Fortnite and Minecraft using X-box and PlayStation systems, communicating w ....

Upper Darby alum's jazz album rated tops by N.Y. Times

Upper Darby School District alum, Immanuel Wilkins’ Omega has captured the #1 ranking for the Best Jazz Albums of 2020 by the New York Times. This debut record on the prestigious Blue Note Record label has been described by the New York Times as “… ten compositions that move with such grace, there’s no time to feel overwhelmed by the surfeit of ideas packed into each one.”
Wilkins, 23, said that he wanted to craft something that spoke directly to the Black experience in America. With his own quartet of piano, bass, and drums, the alto saxophonist tries to capture the many emotions over the senseless loss of black lives in this country in compositions “Ferguson – An American Tradition” and “Mary Turner – An American Tradition.” A soothing song, “The Dreamer,” honors the life of Black author, teacher, and activist James Weldon Johnson. “Warriors” is an upbeat tune that Wilkins describes as being about fr ....
