A bid to turn a small beachside area into Australia s next tourism mecca is all but over with the man behind the scheme banned from fundraising and advertising financial products for 20 years.

Mayfair boss James Mawhinney has shown “no contrition or remorse” for his part in a scheme that has likely cost its investors hundreds of millions.

The Federal Court found that James Mawhinney acted with “total disregard” for the Corporations Act and ASIC Act and that his contravention is “of a very serious kind and warrant a very substantial period of restraint”.
“As I have stated, I have no confidence that Mr Mawhinney properly understands or appreciates the protective purposes of Australian financial services laws, or the importance of properly disclosing relevant and material matters to prospective investors,” Justice Anderson said in his sentencing. ....

A FEDERAL Court ban imposed on the director of besieged finance outfit Mayfair 101 effectively leaves in doubt a $1.6bn tourism vision for Mission Beach and Dunk Island.
On Monday Mayfair 101 founder James Mawhinney was banned from advertising investments and accepting funds from any financial product for 20 years.
And assets secured through Mayfair products can t be transferred out of the country.
The decision was a final blow to the Mayfair founder following an Australian Securities and Investments Commission move to shut down investment products found by the court to mislead and deceive mum and dad investors lured by the promise of security claimed to be simila ....
