NASSAU, BAHAMAS The government is placing a renewed focus on expediting the pipeline for larger scaled investment projects, according to Minister of State for Finance Senator Kawsi Thompson.
Thompson, who was addressing the Canada-Bahamas Virtual Business Mission with the High Commission of Canada, noted the decision-making process for foreign direct investments (FDI) is being reconstructed so that reviews and approvals are delivered quickly.
“The government of The Bahamas is also placing a renewed focus on expediting the pipeline for larger scaled investment projects, which contribute significantly to new jobs and spending in the economy,” he said. ....

Cooper: Cuts to key projects on Family Islands will strangle economy

NASSAU, BAHAMAS Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Deputy Leader Chester Cooper said on Friday that he is “alarmed” and “concerned” about the government’s decision to cut key projects on Family Islands due to economic challenges.
Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis advised last week that the government would cut funding for certain capital projects and seek to implement public-private partnership (PPP) programs to complete those projects, given the country’s current state of public finances.

Govt cuts funding for key projects
PM: We’re turning to PPPs to complete family island airport projects

The government has cut funding for planned upgrades to airports on Exuma, Long Island, North Eleuthera and Abaco and is instead seeking to implement a public-private partnership (PPP) program to complete the projects, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said yesterday.
The affected projects include the Exuma International Airport, the Long Island International Airport, the North Eleuthera International Airport, and upgrades to the Leonard Thompson International Airport in Marsh Harbour, Abaco.
“Given the current state of public finances, the government has had to make some very tough decisions,” Minnis said during the annual Bahamas Business Outlook. ....
