BREAKING NEWS: Apparent COVID-19 variant at Extendicare Kapuskasing SHARE ON: (flickr.com) As if Extendicare Kapuskasing hasn’t had enough of a clobbering by COVID-19, now it’s the site of the first possible variant of the virus in the region. Porcupine Health Unit medical officer of health, Dr. Lianne Catton, says further testing is expected to confirm it. She expects results in the next few days. That revelation came just hours after PHU announced four more cases. One of them is at Extendicare Kap. A second one is in the Kapuskasing… and the other two in the Hearst-Hornepayne area. ....
Updated total of COVID-19 cases: Now 227 for Porcupine Health Unit SHARE ON: Three more cases have been added to the Porcupine Health Unit’s COVID-19 list, bumping the total up to 227. One is in the Kapuskasing area, described by the PHU as being part of an institutional outbreak, without specifying that the only one of its kind in the region is at Extendicare Kap. The other two are in the Hearst-Hornepayne area, both attributed to coming into contact with other cases. Again, the only independently confirmed active cases in that area are at the Constance Lake First Nation. ....

Eleven new cases reported today alone bump the pandemic total in the district to 152. Three of the new cases are along Highway 11, somewhere between Strickland and Opasatika. Two of them are called “institutional”, but no more detail is provided. Extendicare Kap is where one of yesterday’s reported cases came from. Another of the new cases is somewhere in the James and Hudson Bay coast area. The remaining seven are all in Timmins. The chief nursing officer for the health unit, Chantal Riopel, says in the new year alone, there have been 22 new ones. “With the holidays, we were expecting an increase in the number of cases,” she remarks. “We are aware that people did gather or travelled across the region. So we were expecting these cases.” ....
