CMS Helps Community
By Luke Wasness
In the Devils Lake area there are multiple things that students can do to help out. The school has gone to the Hope Center, and students have rung bells for the Salvation Army. Students at CMS have also raked, and our school did the Stuff a Truck. As for the money that the school raises through fundraisers, it is donated to many businesses. Some of the businesses that have been given donations in the past include the Search and Rescue, the Hope Center and the TLC Animal Shelter. If anyone has any suggestions on ways that CMS students can ....

Woodson, Carter G. (1875–1950) – Encyclopedia Virginia

SUMMARY
Carter G. Woodson was a historian and founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, the
Journal of Negro History, and “Negro History Week.” Now known as the “Father of Black History” because of his efforts to promote African American history, Woodson wrote pioneering social histories chronicling the lives of black people at a time when mainstream white scholars denied that African Americans were worthy of historical study. Much of his work was based on public records, letters, speeches, folklore, and autobiographies, materials that were previously ignored. Woodson also used an interdisciplinary approach that combined anthropology, sociology, and history. From 1915 until 1947, he published four monographs, five textbooks, five edited collections of documents, five sociological studies, and thirteen articles. He pioneered in interpretations of slavery and Africa, which were adopted by mainstream historical scholars late in the 1950s. Am ....

Opinion: A month isn't enough time to cover centuries of any culture's history

Richmond
, Ed.D., is president of the Democratic Woman’s Club of San Diego, co-founder and organizer of the Afrofuturism Lounge, and an organizational development manager at UC San Diego. She lives in La Mesa.
Coming out of Black History Month into Women’s History Month, I am struck by the feebleness of trying to squeeze the entirety of any group’s history into one month. Each of the groups with the distinction of having a “month” to tell its stories has been actively engaged in creating history for millennia. The othering associated with having students learn “regular” history and culture with some time allotted for “other” people’s history and culture only serves to reinforce White supremacy and the patriarchy. ....

Father of Black History | WDKX 103.9

March 4, 2021
There was a noted teacher, educator and historian from Virginia who was the founder of The Association For The Study of Negro Life. He wrote the Journal of Negro History, originated Negro History Week and studied more than a dozen works dealing with African-Americans in the United States. The name Carter G. Woodson has rang bells nationwide as the Father of Black history.
Carter G. Woodson developed Negro History Week as the second week of February in 1926. That particular week was important because it marked the birthdays of two men whom he felt greatly influenced Black Americans at the time. President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday is February 12th and Frederick Douglass’ birthday is February 14th. ....
