Coronavirus pandemic 'shines a light' on food insecurity at Penn State, in State College | State College News

Food insecurity has been an issue in State College and at Penn State long before the coronavirus pandemic began. But the pandemic only worsened the issues, making it easier to spot and sparking a sense of urgency in the community to help one another out.
The State College YMCA, State College Food Bank, Lion’s Pantry, and members of the Student Farm at Penn State and the University Park Undergraduate Association have come together to raise awareness of the food insecurity problem on, off and around campus.
Mel Curtis, the anti-hunger director of the YMCA, has organized various events before and throughout the pandemic to provide Centre County families with food in times of need. According to Curtis, food insecurity is something that isn’t “easily detected” and hard to tell if a person or family is struggling. ....

'You have to listen' | Penn State organizations observe Earth Day with climate strike

Penn State’s Sunrise Movement, Climate Action and Eco Action held an Earth Day climate strike at the Old Main lawn from 12-1 p.m. Thursday.
The strike was held not only to celebrate the Earth but to shed light on the environmental issues Pennsylvania experiences and the unique position Penn State has to spark change throughout the state.

Late Filing Penalties on Local Tax Returns in Centre County Waived Through May 17

Unlike federal and state income tax returns, the deadline to file 2020 local tax returns in Pennsylvania is still scheduled for Thursday. But Centre County residents who need more time won’t need to worry about penalties for being a little late.
The Centre County Tax Collection Committee on Monday adopted a resolution to waive all penalties and interest on late income tax filings and payments through May 17, aligning with the state and federal deadlines for 2020 returns.
On March 17, the Internal Revenue Service announced that the due date for filing and payment of 2020 taxes would be extended another month “to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, while also working on important tax administration responsibilities.” ....

New Director Lisa Rives Collens Prepares to Lead Schlow Centre Region Library into the Post-Pandemic Era

As Lisa Rives Collens takes the reins as the new director of Schlow Centre Region Library this month, she faces a set of unprecedented challenges, as the library prepares to adjust to post-pandemic life.
Fortunately, the library and its dedicated staff have already proven they are well-equipped to adapt to changing circumstances.
Before COVID-19 gripped the country in March 2020, 800-1,000 people were visiting Schlow Library in-person each day. The pandemic forced the library to close its doors to the public, but that did not prevent the library from continuing to serve the community.
Collens, who previously served as head of patron services, says, “It took us maybe a week or two, but we really just pivoted hard, and we gradually continue to figure out ways to offer more services safely.” ....
