Events Planned in State College to Commemorate Juneteenth

Friday, June 18
6 p.m.: Tierra Williams and Latisha Franklin have organized a “Juneteenth Jubilee” in Sidney Friedman Park.
The event will recognize local Black leaders, educators, artists, organizations and Black-owned businesses. It will include performances by musicians and poets, remarks by local activists and politicians, food and festivities.
The program will be dedicated to the late Rev. Dr. Donna “Mama” King, who was pastor St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Bellefonte and lecturer in African American studies at Penn State. King, who died in January, was a beloved community figure known for her work as an advocate and historian of local Black history who gave tours of Bellefonte locations involved in the Underground Railroad. Funds raised at the event will benefit St. Paul AME. ....

State High Alumnus Donates $875,000 to Memorial Field Project

An $875,000 donation from a State High alumnus will help pay for the costs of the recently completed Memorial Field renovations.
Class of 1962 graduate Larry Beans made the gift through the SCASD Education Foundation. The school board formally approved the gift on Monday night, along with naming rights for several aspects of the revamped stadium.
“We’re so grateful to Mr. Beans,” Board President Amber Concepcion said. “This gift is going to make such a huge difference to the experiences of students at Memorial Field.”
In recognition of the gift, Beans will name the new home bleachers, press box and concession stand located at the Nittany Avenue entrance. Beans has chosen to name the concession stand for the Class of ’62 collectively. The press box will bear Beans’ name and a donor plaque will be placed on the concourse next to the bleachers. ....

I urge all voters in the State College Area School District to support Deborah Anderson for school board. I have known Deborah for 10 years, and am familiar with her work on various school committees related to academics and athletics. She is a tireless volunteer, collaborative team-player, and informed parent prepared to serve the best interests of all students in our district.
As the parent of two sons who are now at State High, Deborah is familiar with all levels of education in the district, but makes an effort to stay informed about the unique issues facing students of different backgrounds and with different needs.
