Newton Police Reform Task Force offers recommendations, cites problems

Job dissatisfaction and frustration with local leadership topped police survey results revealed during the Newton Police Reform Task Force’s recent presentation to the City Council.
Before delving into recommendations for the future of the department, the task force and consulting firm Strategy Matters went over feedback from the survey, which was given to sworn and civilian employees.
Of the entire force (as of June 2020 there were 141 uniformed officers) and civilian employees, 44 responded to the survey. Of the 44, 26 identified themselves as officers and 10 as civilian staff (the rest had other departmental positions).
A majority (43.9 percent) said they were “dissatisfied” with the department as a place to work. Some reasons included a “Lack of support from the mayor, city council and community,” the facilities, and “Lack of confidence in NPD leadership and management.” These factors have undermined morale, according to the report. ....

Newton's all-male Highland Glee Club names first female music director

The venerable, all-male Highland Glee Club has entered a new era - appointing the first female music director in its 112-year history.
Resident Sarah Telford, who sang with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops, studied conducting at the Boston University School of Music and worked as the assistant conductor of the Arlington-Belmont Chorale, according to a press release.
She is embracing her new role with the club, which formed in Newton Highlands in 1908. Although the group has not held any virtual performances, Telford said she hopes it will perform outside in the summer and discussed her vision for the future. ....

Biologists, ecologists reflect on Newton's wild spaces

Oliver and Nick Komar grew up in Newton Highlands, and their lives today revolve around birds.
The twin brothers still remember their first day of birding with their father along the Charles River in the Oak Hill area when they were 7 years old. They saw a rose-breasted grosbeak and a Baltimore oriole.
“When I got those beautiful birds in focus in my binoculars, I was hooked,” said Nick.
From then on, they biked around Newton every day before and after school looking for birds. Oliver and Nick received early encouragement and training from Brookline Bird Club members and began leading outings at the age of 12. ....

Newton Police reform recommendations on time even with fatal shooting

The city’s Police Reform Task Force on Friday said it was “not able, at this time, to speak in one voice” about how a police-involved fatal shooting on Jan. 5, should inform its recommendations to Mayor Ruthanne Fuller.
“We continue to deliberate over this tragedy and are working hard to make sure that our recommendations incorporate the most useful lessons we can learn going forward,” the task force said via email.
However, when asked if they would request an extension to turn in their ideas due to the fatal shooting, they said, “We are on course to give our recommendations to Mayor Fuller by Feb. 1, with the formal report to follow shortly afterwards.” ....

As an investigation continues into the fatal shooting by Newton police of a 28-year-old resident experiencing a mental health crisis, advocates are calling on local leaders to prioritize mental health resources as part of efforts to overhaul the cityâs police department.
Michael Conlon, 28, was shot Jan. 5 inside the building where he lived in Newton Highlands after he threatened the owner of a candy store, then attacked officers with a knife and fire extinguisher, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.
