The Flint Journal show the Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners voted to give a $25,000 bonus to top-level administrators and $12,500 to department heads. In total, around 250 employees bonuses, which officials described as hazard pay.

Brian Boggs, who was awarded a $25,000 bonus, said he also supported the payments, which were meant to help the employees who work for the county.

A group of elected officials in Michigan gave themselves bonuses with money that was earmarked for COVID-19 relief.
The Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners voted last week to give “hazard pay” to dozens of county employees, including $2,000 for cleaning staff.
However, the county commissioners also extended the “hazard pay” bonuses to themselves between $25,000 and $5,000.
The commissioners all of whom are Republicans are paid $10,000 a year and receive a stipend for meetings for the part-time job.

Other elected county officials also received payments, including Sheriff Brian BeGole, who got $25,000, and prosecutor Scott Koerner, who received $12,500. ....

Officials in Michigan County Used Virus Money for Bonuses

Commissioners all Republicans last week voted to award more than $500,000 to dozens of county employees. It ranged from $25,000 for administrators to $2,000 for cleaning staff. All recipients got at least $1,000.
Besides Root, commissioners John Plowman and Brandon Marks each received $10,000, and the other four commissioners got $5,000 each.
Most commissioners are paid $10,000 a year for their part-time job, plus a stipend for meetings.
“I think that I earned it, Commissioner Cindy Garber said of the bonus. “I work really hard at this job. I was here in-person all through this crazy year.”
Commissioner Marlene Webster said she was “mortified” when money appeared in her bank account and didn t know she had voted to reward herself. ....
