NORWICH As officials approach the issue of racism and the effect on city services a model may already exist right within the city s borders. During its meeting on July 19, the City Council voted unanimously on a resolution to recognize racism as a public health crisis. Among the measures in the resolution is the creation of a Health Equity Commission to help eliminate barriers to healthcare and other opportunities in the city. However, the Board of Education has already had its Equity Committee for some time. Formed last fall, the committee has met twice so far and, according to Board of Education Secretary Carline Charmelus the process is still early, but leading to changes. Charmelus said the board approved a Racial Equity Policy during June’s meeting, and is working on a plan for the district’s Equity Director Sarah Duso. ....

Norwich Connecticut Appellate Court Judge Nina F. Elgo recalled a day in elementary school when a boy cornered her and said: “what are you? Are you a Jap? Are you a Chink?” The stunned girl went home and asked her Filipino immigrant parents what the boy meant. Dissatisfied at the answer, Elgo said it took her years to understand her feelings and response to the experience. Elgo recalled the incident during a forum Tuesday at Norwich Free Academy that featured several prominent Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders discussing their heritage and the importance of mentoring young students as future leaders. NORWICH Kelly Steam Magnet Middle School seventh grade student Braden Pink is looking forward to getting the vaccine, as it means dining out, seeing friends more often and eventually not worrying about masks. “We’ve been stuck for more than a year with COVID, so it’s nice to slowly get back to our normal lives,” Pink said. On Monday, Norwich Public Schools with United Community Family Services (UCFS) ran a COVID-19 vaccine clinic for 175 Kelly students. Another one for 125 Teacher’s Memorial Global Magnet Middle School students will take place on Tuesday.
