Planning Commission OKs city plans despite farmer opposition


Despite some pushback from residents, the Planning Commission unanimously approved two plans for the City of Norman’s solar panel project at a water treatment facility.
Farmers who live near 3000 E. Robinson Street told commissioners Thursday night that the city’s plans to expand some operations at the Vernon Campbell Water Treatment Plant could increase stormwater runoff in an area prone to flooding.
The Utilities Authority’s plan is to install a solar array to offset electricity usage and install a compost scale structure near the compost facility.
Alison Wilson wanted to know what the city’s plans are to mitigate stormwater runoff and how staff arrived at the opinion that there would be no negative impacts, as stated in a report. ....

A marathon City Council meeting in Norman finally came to an end early Wednesday morning with no money taken from the police department budget. There were $500,000 on the chopping block.
The City Council meeting ended just before 3 a.m. at the Norman City Hall. The city council approved a budget without taking any money from the police department.Sign up for our Newsletters
The councilors were considering taking $500,000 from the police department and using it to fund a mobile crisis response unit.
That was a controversial move that drew plenty of criticism from the Fraternal Order of Police and some residents, especially since Norman slashed the police department s budget by $865,000 in 2020. ....
