NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk Public Schools will soon be moving into the next phase of its Return to Learn plan as school board members have agreed on a date to bring students back to the classroom.
“Opening a school district after a year of distance learning is a monumental step. We have learned so much about implementing innovative methods for sustaining a successful educational environment during a pandemic. Dr. Byrdsong and her executive leadership team continue to diligently monitor community health metrics to make informed decisions with the best interest of students and staff in mind and I am pleased that we unanimously voted to approve the administration’s updated plan for a safe return to in-person instruction and operations,” said School Board Chair Dr. Adale Martin. ....

NORFOLK, Va. On Wednesday, the Norfolk School Board unanimously voted to approve an updated, hybrid plan for a return to in-person learning.
Division officials will start phasing students back inside the classroom on March 15, almost a year to the date after they were sent home.
“The health and wellbeing of our students is paramount,” said Norfolk Superintendent Dr. Sharon Byrdsong. ....

The Crispus Attucks Cultural Center, Inc, (CACC) the
organization created to restore Norfolk’s Historic Attucks Theatre will be dissolved as of December 31, according to leaders of the non-profit’s Board of Directors.
LaVon Purnell-Wilson, the current board chair since 2016, told the GUIDE two weeks ago, that she and other CACC board members were in the final stages of the process of closing out the operation of the organization.
Purnell-Wilson said the Board of Directors has been discussing disbanding the CACC for the past three years, even while planning for the historic theater’s centennial celebrations which took place in 2019-2020. ....

NORFOLK, VA – On December 16, the Norfolk School Board voted to revise its previous decision to support a return to school plan.
The decision to revert back to in-person instruction is now based on the status of the recommended three core indicators outlined by the CDC.
The board will consider case incidence per 100,000 persons within the past 14 days, percent positivity (RT-PCR test) during the past 14 days, and the school division’s readiness to implement key mitigation strategies.
When case incidence per 100,000 and percent positivity both reach the moderate risk of disease transmission level (yellow) for 14 consecutive days in the City of Norfolk, the school division may begin implementing its phased approach to in-person instruction as previously approved: ....
