The South Bay’s largest school district held new teacher orientation sessions Monday to prepare teachers and staff for classes starting in two weeks.
It was full speed ahead for the San Jose Unified School District with as the state wants it all in-class instruction with independent studies available for families who choose to stay home. And that optimistic attitude doesn’t seem to be affected by worries about a cluster of new cases elsewhere.
The president of the 1,500 member San Jose Teachers Association says new outbreaks, like the one in Brentwood, have not dimmed enthusiasm.

The San Jose Unified School District has voted to not renew its contract with the San Jose Police Department and will remove police officers from all SJSD campuses.
District Superintendent Nancy Albarran said,
The staff brought forth the recommendation after looking at our survey data from our constituents, some focus groups that were done by a subset of trustees. The recommendation was to continue that partnership as part of our safety plan components and the board made a decision to not renew that agreement.

OAKLAND, Calif. - As schools across California welcome back more students on campus, some distance learning practices look likely to survive the pandemic.
School closures exposed deeply embedded inequalities in California education, as well as the crucial lifelines that schools provide for their communities.
But in nearly 12 months of distance learning, teachers pushed through difficult days to find new solutions that kept kids learning during an upended school year.
Gov. Gavin Newsom is in the Bay Area to talk about the plan to reopen most California schools for in-person learning over the next few weeks. He announced the COVID-19 positivity rate is at a record-low 1.8%.
