Commission on Judicial Selection Recommends Fourth Judicial District Candidates to Governor Walz
[ST. PAUL, MN] – The Commission on Judicial Selection announced today it is recommending five candidates for consideration to fill two vacancies in Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District. These vacancies will occur upon the retirements of the Honorable Margaret A. Daly and the Honorable Kathleen D. Sheehy. These seats are chambered in Minneapolis in Hennepin County.
Flavio Abreu: Mr. Abreu is an Assistant City Attorney at the Minneapolis City Attorney’s Office, where he prosecutes a variety of gross misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and petty misdemeanor cases. Mr. Abreu is also an adjunct professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law, where he teaches trial advocacy and mentors law students. BOISE, Idaho (KIFI) – Governor Brad Little announced he appointed Matthew Roker of Caldwell as District Judge in the Third Judicial District and Derrick O’Neill of Boise as District Judge in the Fourth Judicial District.
“Both Matthew Roker and Derrick O’Neill have strong track records practicing law in Idaho and contributing to our communities, and I appreciate them for their willingness to step up to serve the people of Idaho as judges,” Governor Little said.
Roker is a partner in the law firm Lovan Roker & Rounds, P.C., in Caldwell. He has practiced law in Idaho since 1996 and spent 25 years practicing criminal defense in Canyon County. In 2018, he won the Professionalism Award for the Third Judicial District from the Idaho State Bar. The Alaska Constitution established the Alaska Judicial Council to serve an essential role in building and maintaining fair and impartial courts throughout Alaska. Our Alaska Constitution commands that appointments to the Council by the governor and the bar association “shall be made with due consideration to area representation and without regard to political affiliation.” Sadly, the governor has taken the unprecedented step of nominating a third public member from Southcentral Alaska and failed to appoint a public member “with due consideration to area representation.” If confirmed, Kristie Babcock from the Kenai would join Dave Parker from the Mat-Su and Lynne Gallant from Anchorage as the third public member of the Council from Southcentral.
