Oakland County to host free drive-thru Narcan training Alliance hosts online, in-person training events Published: Updated: Tags: PONTIAC, Mich. – The Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities is taking its Narcan training curbside to combat the rise in overdose deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 81,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States in the 12-month period ending May 2020. The CDC said it is the highest number of overdose deaths in a year. To help combat this issue, the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities pivoted to provide virtual Narcan training and starting Friday, it is also offering drive up training. ....

(WTOC) - Chatham County Police recently reported their officers are using a medication called Narcan to revive people overdosing on opioids more often. According to Chatham Police, officers have used it thirty times in the last six months. And Chatham County Police aren’t the only local agency seeing a rise in cases so far this year. Chatham Emergency Services reports a twenty percent increase in overdose calls in 2021. Michael Sarhatt, Director over the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team weighed in on what an upward trend in Narcan doses being given might indicate. ....

Officials on Wednesday said there were 99 such deaths in the county, a 60 percent increase from 62 in 2019, which had been the county s worst previous year. The rise in fentanyl-laced drugs and a global pandemic that has strained people’s mental health and fueled a rise in addiction and drug use are believed to be behind the surge. ....

Three people overdosed on fentanyl on Feb. 4 in the county, and two of those people a Roodhouse man and a Wrights woman died as a result. A fourth person overdosed on Saturday. “It’s kind of rare,” Greene County Sheriff Rob McMillen said, adding that they more typically might see one fentanyl overdose in a month. “These were just clustered together.
