There aren t many houses left in San Francisco that were built before the Great Quake of 1906. This converted farmhouse at
2533 Folsom Street was built 40 years before the tragic day and still features its original water tower - though now that tower too has been converted into what might be the coolest work from home office in the city.
Restoring the water tower was a shared effort that was started by previous owners and was completed by our seller, listing agent  Dale Boutiette told SFGATE.  Not only is it a wonderful Victorian home on a very large lot, it provides a portal into the Mission s past as a vibrant agricultural community.   ....

Column: Mexico City residents have to contend with two of these natural hazards
The Soufrière eruption on St. Vincent has put more than 100,000 people in the Caribbean at risk. A much greater crowd lives in the shadow of two volcanoes, along with a history of earthquakes, in a city on the American continent. What’s lacking in São Paulo and Shanghai are volcanoes and frequent earthquakes. Mexico City has got them. Not one, but two active volcanoes loom over its densely populated satellite towns.  ....

For fifteen years I d been waiting for a catastrophe greater than my birth, says the eponymous protagonist of Carol Edgarian s new novel Vera. The quake gave it to me. Brought up by Swedish widow Morie (a diminutive for mor, or mother) alongside her stepsister Pie (for Piper), Vera has always known that her biological mother is notorious brothelkeeper Madame Rose, with whom she has intermittent contact. ....
