Canada airs concern over China's actions in South China Sea

As the world commemorates the fifth anniversary of the Arbitral Tribunal ruling on the South China Sea, Canada has expressed its concern over China’s “escalatory and destabilizing actions” in South China and the East China Sea as it called on all parties to comply with the international court’s decision that soundly rejected Beijing’s excessive nine-dash line claim as without basis.

In a statement on Monday, the Global Affairs of Canada described the July 2016 Arbitral Award as a “significant milestone” and a useful basis for peacefully resolving disputes in the South China Sea. ....

US reaffirms commitment to PH against armed attack in South China Sea

The United States on Monday reaffirmed its commitment to invoke the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) and come to the defense of the Philippines in case of an armed attack against its armed forces, public vessels or aircraft in the South China Sea.

US State Secretary Antony J. Blinken reiterated Washington’s commitment as the world commemorates the fifth anniversary of the 2016 Arbitral Tribunal ruling in favor of the Philippine petition to invalidate China’s excessive claims in the South China Sea.
“The United States reaffirms its July 13, 2020 policy regarding maritime claims in the South China Sea. We also reaffirm that an armed attack on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft in the South China Sea would invoke U.S. mutual defense commitments under Article IV of the 1951 U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty,” the US State secretary said. ....

The was the question posed by former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario to the Filipino people on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Arbitral Tribunal decision that rejected China’s excessive claim over the vast resources of the South China Sea.
Speaking at the virtual forum entitled Reinforcing the 2016 Arbitral Victory: The West Philippine Sea in the Convergence of Strategies, Del Rosario narrated Duterte’s series of pronouncements in the past five years that undermined the Arbitral Award, specifically by setting it aside in favor of economic benefits from China. ....
