The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) today announced that Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART) executive director Steve Sliver will retire after 34 years of service to the State of Michigan.
Sliver has been EGLE’s senior representative on MPART since April 2018 and was named executive director in 2019 when Gov. Whitmer established MPART as a permanent advisory body within EGLE under Executive Order 2019-3.
Under Sliver’s leadership, MPART has been widely recognized as a national leader in the response to PFAS contamination in drinking water. Notable accomplishments of the multi-agency taskforce include the nation’s first statewide testing of public water supplies and schools for PFAS, the establishment of some of the nation’s most comprehensive PFAS in drinking water standards and the country’s largest coll ....

BELMONT, MI There are approximately 34,000 cubic yards of PFAS-laden leather manufacturing waste buried at Wolverine World Wide’s House Street dump in Belmont, where, for more than 50 years, it has been feeding a plume that’s poisoned the aquifer that local residents tap for drinking water.
To dig that material up and move it to a lined landfill designed for hazardous waste would take more than three years and cost about $200 million, according to a study of cleanup options developed by the company’s environmental consultant. ....

KALAMAZOO, MI The Michigan PFAS Action Response Team, or MPART, and the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport will update residents on its investigation of PFAS contamination found near the airport.
MPART representatives from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) along with the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department and the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport will host a virtual community meeting from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, March 1.
Last year, the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport applied for and received a state grant to test the soil and groundwater around the airport for PFAS as a proactive step to determine if any of the ground around the airport contained the contaminants, at at what levels. ....
