In some years between 1901 and 1913, after concluding their National League schedule, the Cubs played more than a dozen more games in October, not counting the World Series or City Series.
In 1914, they played none.
Maybe it was because there had been a surfeit of Major League baseball in Chicago that year. The Cubs played on the west side, the White Sox on the south side and the city s team in the new Federal League played on the north side, in their splendid new ballpark bounded by Addison and Clark streets, and by Sheffield and Waveland avenues. ....

In 1911, the White Sox had defeated the Cubs in the City Series in 4 games, then the teams had met in additional game for charity at Comiskey Park.
The story was the same in 1912, except the City Series took 9 games, due to a pair of ties.
The 1912 rematch following the South Siders seventh-game victory was for a different charity. Instead of a hospital, proceeds were earmarked for the Women s Trade Union League.
Most of the players who competed in the city championship battles will appear in the charity game, the Chicago Tribune wrote on Saturday, Oct. 19, a day before the contest at Comiskey Park. Reulbach, Leifield, and Cheney will pitch for the Cubs; Benz, Lamline, and Lange for the Sox. Archer and Cotter will catch for the west siders and Sullivan and Schalk will receive for the Callahans. ....

The Cubs won 104 games in 1909. They finished second, 6.5 games behind the Pirates.
They won 104 games again in 1910. They won the pennant by 13 games over the Giants and 17.5 over the Pirates.
Go figure!
When the Cubs had played the Tigers in the World Series in 1908, it ended, in 5 games, on Oct. 14.
The 1910 Series, in which they faced the Athletics, did not even begin until Oct. 17. The Cubs needed a 10-inning win in Game 4 just to extend the series by a day, to Oct. 23.
But that didn t prevent the Cubs from continuing to play after the Series ended or at least try to play. ....
