NEWTON, MA More than 500 people logged into a four-hour zoning meeting Monday night to hear about a controversial proposal that would strictly regulate gun shops in town.
The proposal was largely met with approval, though several residents asked for more strict regulations if not a ban. Several others argued against any regulation, calling the scramble for such hand wringing, and an infringement of rights. ....

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said she first learned about a gun shop planning to open at 709 Washington St. about two weeks before city councilors, according to an email she sent April 29.
Many members of the City Council, including President Susan Albright, said they only found out about the firearms dealer after receiving emails from worried constituents about rumors they had heard.
“During the week of March 29, NPD [Newton Police Department] moved forward the paperwork on the application and I first learned that a gun store was proposed for Washington Street,” she said in the email. “Internal discussions began focused on the approval process for firearm sales licenses and what powers and options we have as a city.” ....

During the week of March 29, NPD moved forward the paperwork on the application and I first learned that a gun store was proposed for Washington Street, Fuller said in a statement Thursday night. ....

Citizen engagement. I’ve seen it in abundance this week: citizens in Centerville meeting with DPW staff to hear about the location of a pump station and five Town Councilors in attendance; Comprehensive Financial Advisory Committee(CFAC) members debating then recommending ways to finance our 30-year wastewater plan; our youth learning and providing feedback about wastewater and climate change; and residents weighing in at Planning Board and ZBA meetings on proposed zoning changes.
In Heather Hunt’s Op-ed last week, she called out the town for failing to fully engage its citizenry, especially around issues on zoning changes. I think she’s mistaken. While I believe there’s always room for improvement, I know that the Town Council is fully committed to making sure all residents, whether retired or working two or three jobs, homeowners or renters, have a voice at the table. What I can’t guarant ....
