The Winona Human Rights Commission is seeking nominations for an award to honor an individual or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the Winona area concerning human rights issues.
The eligible recipient should be an individual or organization (business, non-profit, volunteer group, faith-based group) from Winona County and has helped reduce barriers to persons of protected classes and has fought discrimination in the City of Winona or Winona County. Vulnerable groups may be the “protected classes” defined in the Minnesota Human Rights Act, namely, those who may suffer discrimination because of age, race, color, creed, gender, religion, disability, family status, marital status, national origin, status with regard to public assistance, or sexual orientation. State Rolls Out Rental Aid Program

Winona renters who have struggled to pay rent, or are behind in rent, due to disruptions caused by COVID can now take advantage of a new state aid program, RentHelpMN.
RentHelpMN launched this week and applications are now open online.
Eligible Minnesota renters can receive help with rent and utility bills dated on or after March 13, 2020. Those who qualify can receive up to 15 months of total assistance.
Those who meet these conditions will qualify:
● Are renting their primary residence
● Have experienced financial hardship due to COVID (have applied for unemployment, can show a reduction in household income and/or significant unexpected costs) ....

Winona Police, DOC to Hold Community Meeting on Level 3 Offender's Release to Winona

WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-The Winona Police Department and Minnesota Department of Corrections are hosting a meeting about a level three predatory offender’s recent relocation to Winona.    
Chief Police Deputy Jay Rassmussen says the meeting will include an educational presentation and a Q & A with law enforcement officials. The meeting will be held zoom and there are limited seats available for in-person attendance. 
The offender is 39-year-old Jason M. Cieminski. His change of address to the 1800 block of Gilmore Ave. is marked March 23.  
The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 28 from 6-7 p.m.

Winona Slated to Receive Over $3 Million From Rescue Plan

(KWNO)- The City of Winona could see over $3 million in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan, which was signed into law Thursday.  
That’s according to Mayor Scott Sherman. During an interview on KWNO’s In the Know Friday, Sherman said it wasn’t appropriate for him to say where the money would go at this point but offer a general direction for the money.  
“In general, we’re going to be looking to use it wisely. We’re going to be looking to use it so it potentially helps to create other funding options,” Sherman said.   ....
