Several towns across the Cape exemplify the work that is needed to mitigate climate change. In this series, in conjunction with the Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative, we will review one town from each of the four quadrants that define the Cape. The towns being recognized for their work to mitigate climate change are Upper CapeâMashpee; Mid CapeâYarmouth; Lower CapeâChatham; and Outer CapeâWellfleet. From the Upper Cape, Mashpee demonstrates what it takes to reduce fossil fuel energy use, produce renewable energy and save taxpayer dollars in the process. As a member of the military for the past 19 years, Matthew Davis has served his country. Mr. Davis said being in the military teaches the importance of civil service and doing what is best for the group, not the individual. A group-oriented philosophy should bode well for the newest candidate running for Mashpee School Committee. Mr. Davis, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard at Joint Base Cape Cod, is one of two candidates seeking a spot on the school committee. He and Brian M. Weeden are running unopposed for the two open three-year seats on the committee. âWith my current career, you have to be unbiased at times. Iâm not going to let whatâs best for me and my family let me interfere with whatâs best for the majority of families,â he said. âI try to be that person that doesnât go, âWhatâs good for me?â I go, âWhatâs good for who I am serving?â Thatâs a part of the civil service. Itâs ....

The chairperson presides over tribal council meetings and acts as the tribe’s official spokesperson. They also serve as the coordinator over all tribal government activities. The tribe’s last two chairmen have either been convicted of federal crimes or are currently facing federal charges. Some of the candidates have cited the need to restore the integrity of the tribe’s governing process and improve accountability. The election is currently set to take place through mail-in balloting, with Election Day scheduled for March 26. However, three tribal members, including Tobey, have sued the tribal council and the tribe s election committee to allow in-person voting and reschedule the election to a later date. ....
Mashpee public health officials are preparing to help coordinate the massive COVID-19 vaccine distribution effort on a local level whenever doses of the vaccine become available. âIt is going to be a kind of all hands on deck type of response,â Mashpee Health Agent Glen E. Harrington said at the Mashpee Board of Health meeting on Thursday last week, January 21. As the state prepares to vaccinate all people 75 and older, Mr. Harrington has reviewed the townâs demographic information and sent an estimate of the population that qualifies for vaccinations in Phase 2 to the state. About one-third of the population of Mashpee, or about 4,500 residents, are over the age of 65. Of those about 2,500 are over the age of 75. ....
