MONUMENT — A planned public hearing for the Conexus Commercial Metropolitan District between Old Denver Highway and Interstate 25 in Monument was put on hold Monday night as more than 250 people showed up to voice their opinion on the development.
The number of community members exceeded capacity limits at Town Hall. The Board of Trustees has now pushed the meeting two weeks to August 16.
Neighbors tell News 5 they were notified in writing from the town that six warehouse buildings are planned by Becknell Industrial for the area. Locals say the plan has changed since September of last year when they were told the land would be used as multi-use property. ....

The town of Monument sold five grave plots in city-owned Monument Cemetery to a Boy Scout’s family in an apparent effort to dodge a First Amendment lawsuit threatened by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.
The plots, which cost $800 each, were sold on March 19, Monument Town Manager Mike Foreman says. That was weeks after the MRFF raised objections to a stone memorial monument installed there, with the city’s help, as the Eagle Scout project of Michael Carlson.
The memorial has this inscription: “Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American soldier. One died for your soul, the other died for your freedom. We honor those who made freedom a reality.” ....

TCA SENIOR WINS NATIONAL WRITING AWARD
Daniel D’Agnese, a senior at The Classical Academy, was recently awarded a Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Silver Medal for his writing portfolio, “I’m Not Myself Today.”
The portfolio contained six writing pieces, including short stories. His work previously won a Gold Key at the West Region Writing-at-Large, competing with other writers across the western states. The Gold Key qualified D’Agnese to compete at the National level.
More than 80,000 students submitted nearly 230,000 works of art and writing to the 2021 Scholastic Awards. Only 2,000 works received National Medals, which means D’Agnese’s work is within the top 1% of all submissions. He was selected by some of the foremost leaders in the visual and literary arts, for excellence in originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. ....

Kratom Ban in Colorado Town and Bid to Overturn It

During a virtual meeting that starts at 6:30 p.m. today, February 16, the board of trustees for the Town of Monument will hear a presentation seeking to overturn the community s prohibition on sales of kratom, an herbal pain reliever of Southeast Asian origin.
Leading the charge will be Mac Haddow, senior fellow on public policy at the American Kratom Association. Haddow is one of the nation s leading advocates for the popular but controversial substance, which the federal Food and Drug Administration has spent the past several years demonizing an effort that led Denver in November 2017 to require labeling that says kratom is not safe for human consumption. Nonetheless, efforts to classify kratom as a Schedule I narcotic, on par with heroin and cocaine, were rejected by the feds in 2018 a development that Haddow accuses the FDA of trying to hush up for more than two years. ....
