Hendrickson/Boulevard Sentinel Local labor leaders demand justice for workers who have borne the brunt of COVID-19 By Zach Goodwin Most years, Workers’ Memorial Day, April 28, is a time to remember those killed or injured on the job and to call on politicians and employers to improve safety. This year, at a local event by the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) and its community allies, the day took on an extra dimension. There was more loss and more grief because COVID-19 has disproportionately claimed the lives of lower-income, Latinx and Black people, many of them workers who could not work from home. This loss and grief fueled demands not only for safety, but for justice for ending the systemic exploitation of workers laid bare by the p ....
Governor’s budget includes provisions to help workers, enhance workers compensation. //end headline wrapper ?> Road construction. Photo from WisDOT. It has always fascinated me that American workers accomplished so much even when the technology and machinery that we take for granted now wasn’t yet available back then. Consider the New York skyscrapers, for instance. A small gathering of campaigners took part. The socially-distanced event – beside the memorial garden in Town Hall Square – was organised by Keighley Trades Union Council, in conjunction with the town council. The Rev Pritchard also made reference to the “five bad words” – ‘health and safety gone mad’ – emphasising how ill-thought-out the phrase was. His message was supported by Janet Morgan, of the Trades Union Council. ....

The strike began after the worker s contracts expired and negotiations for a new contract failed. The meeting s keynote speaker, International UMWA President Cecil Roberts, began his speech by talking about Workers Memorial Day and the dangers of being a coal miner. Most of you may not be aware that today is Workers Memorial Day, said Roberts. [It] is celebrated by every [American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations] (AFL-CIO) union in the United States of America every April, the 28th. Today, before you get home tonight and put your head on your pillow, another worker somewhere in this country will be killed on the job. Fourteen workers every single day day in the United States, but that s not all. I want you to listen to this number every year; somewhere between 50 and 60,000 workers die from occupational illnesses like black lung, brown lung, white lung, cancer. They re dying because they went to work, and one of the issues that we know pres ....
