Labor leaders honor fallen workers after a year of devastation due to COVID

The ceremonial ringing of a bell concluded the reading of 119 names during a virtual memorial Wednesday names of people who left for work one day and never came home.
Each year, the state Department of Labor & Industries pays tribute to the workers who died on the job. L&I resumed its Worker Memorial Day tradition despite the pandemic, which forced the closure of the event in 2020.   
But last year was unlike any other since the tradition started more than two decades ago. The pandemic brought new risks to frontline and essential workers and contributed significantly to work-related deaths. Of the 119 deaths on the job last year, two dozen of them resulted from workers contracting COVID-19 while working in hospitals, long-term care facilities and other workplaces. That amounts to about 20 percent of the workplace deaths in 2020. ....

YORK s city walls will light up in memory of key workers lost to the pandemic today amid calls for answers .
From Hull or Leeds to Bradford, town halls across the region will glow purple to mark International Workers Memorial Day.
A further national minute of silence will be held at midday to pay tribute to all working people who have died due to work in the past year.
It comes as the Trades Union Congress (TUC) calls on Yorkshire s MPs to support an immediate public inquiry into the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. ....

Minnesota Pauses to Remember Fallen Highway Workers
Today is Worker Memorial Day in Minnesota.
Governor Tim Walz has issued an official proclamation recognizing the high-priced transportation workers have paid in the construction and maintenance of Minnesota s transportation system. The I-35W bridge will be lit in orange this evening and honor of Worker Memorial Day.
“Work zone safety is everyone’s responsibility. Our state’s transportation workers keep our roadways operating efficiently and safely, and in turn, it’s on all of us to ensure that they return home safely, as well,” said Governor Walz. “On this Worker Memorial Day, we remember those we have lost, and we recommit ourselves to doing everything we can to keep our workers safe.” ....

A minute’s silence will be held on Wednesday to pay tribute to people who got infected with Covid-19 in work and died as a result.
To mark International Workers’ Memorial Day public buildings, including the SSE Hydro and Edinburgh Castle, will be lit up purple and the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) and Scottish Hazards have written to councils to urge them to do the same. ....
