Citicable
/ City of Cincinnati
Cincinnati Council Wednesday approved small donations to a few nonprofit organizations using extra funds from Council Member Chris Seelbach s office.
My administrative director left several months ago, and given how late we are in the term we re not going to replace her, Seelbach said. So I m donating her salary to three organizations.
The appropriation gives $2,500 each to:
Lighthouse Youth Services Safe and Supported program for homeless LGBTQ+ young people
Cincinnati Union Bethel s Off the Streets program for women dealing with addiction and human trafficking
Queen City Bulldog Rescue

She Bought Freedom for Herself and Other Slaves Today a Park is Named in Her Honor

ByStacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent
Alethia Browning Tanner worked to purchase the freedom of more than 20 of her relatives and neighbors, mostly the family of her older sister Laurana including Laurana herself, her children, and her grandchildren.
In her early years, Alethia Browning Tanner sold vegetables in a produce stall near President’s Square – now known as Lafayette Square – in what is now Northwest Washington, D.C.
According to the D.C. Genealogy Research, Resources, and Records, Tanner bought her freedom in 1810 and later purchased several relatives’ release.
She was the first woman on the Roll of Members of the Union Bethel AME Church (now Metropolitan AME Church on M Street), and Turner owned land and a store at 14th and H Streets, which she left to her nephews – one of whom later sold the property for $100,000. ....

In 'Soul,' Jon Batiste's music helps bring Pixar's first Black lead to life

Pixar s new animated film
Soul is the story of Joe Gardner, a middle school school music teacher with big dreams about performing jazz onstage. Music is all I think about, from the moment I wake up in the morning to the moment I fall asleep at night, he says. I was born to play.
Born to Play is the name of one of the movie s many songs composed, arranged and performed by real-life musician, Jon Batiste. He was one of several of the animated film s musical consultants, who also included Herbie Hancock, Daveed Diggs and Questlove.
I love Joe because he has this vision for his life and this thing that makes him feel alive, Batiste says from his home outside New York City. ....
