Self-exploration is good for Pixar Oscar contender 'Soul'

“Soul” isn’t what most might expect from a big-studio, animated movie for kids, but Pixar’s success affords it the freedom to try new things including exploring the oldest of questions.
“I think a lot of us have fallen into that idea of ‘Just find your passion; do what you love, and everything else will fall into place,’ and I came to a point where I’m like, ‘Not everything is coming into place. I’m not happy and content all the time just because I love doing animation,’ ” says “Soul” director and co-writer Pete Docter, a two-time Oscar winner. ....

Soul: how Pixar's first Black-led film, on Disney+, is leading a change in animation

The company also formed a Culture Trust of Black Pixar employees, to make sure that representation sat comfortably with them. Ruffin was part of these conversations, and explains that he found the process to be both a refreshing and fruitful one.
“Being part of Pixar’s Internal Culture Trust allowed myself and a group of several other African American Pixar artists to meet and discuss the development and design of Joe’s character.

“Every session was led with honesty, and it laid out a healthy foundation for open discussions.”
He’s positive about what the release of Soul will mean for Black animation going forward. “The release of Soul means there’s a platform for Black animation and that more stories that can be told, he says. “There’s so much we can learn from each other and through the stories we tell through animation. In 'Soul,' Jon Batiste's music helps bring Pixar's first Black lead to life

Pixar s new animated film
Soul is the story of Joe Gardner, a middle school school music teacher with big dreams about performing jazz onstage. Music is all I think about, from the moment I wake up in the morning to the moment I fall asleep at night, he says. I was born to play.
Born to Play is the name of one of the movie s many songs composed, arranged and performed by real-life musician, Jon Batiste. He was one of several of the animated film s musical consultants, who also included Herbie Hancock, Daveed Diggs and Questlove.
I love Joe because he has this vision for his life and this thing that makes him feel alive, Batiste says from his home outside New York City. ....
