Shame: Drunk Tank Pink

Bandcamp / Buy
Drunk-tank pink is the shade of pacification. Meant to neutralize hostility and placate violence, the color was originally developed for a naval correctional institute in 1979, and when studies appeared to confirm its calming effects, the bubblegum hue was splashed across prison cells, psychiatric wards, and of course, drunk tanks. South London loudmouths Shame seem immune to its powers. Their second album is named for the pigment, which frontman Charlie Steen slathered on the walls of a roomy closet at home. During a period of self-imposed hermetism inside what he christened “the Womb,” Steen sat in silence and channeled an internal noise. ....

Shame: Drunk Tank Pink review – indie punks confront the post-gig era | Indie

Last modified on Fri 15 Jan 2021 03.11 EST
The annals of rock history are packed with songs bemoaning the lot of the artist on tour. You can understand the urge to write them – they proliferate on second albums, when artists who have done almost nothing except tour since their debut search for inspiration – but, nevertheless, attempting to elicit sympathy for a rock band among people who do a proper job for a living always seems dementedly optimistic.
Under the circumstances, you have to take your hat off to London quintet Shame: whatever you make of their second album, they’ve successfully come up with an entirely new variant on a well-worn theme. Drunk Tank Pink – which takes its name from the colour that psychologists discovered automatically weakens anyone who stares at it for two minutes, and which went on to become the decor of choice in cells for intoxicated arrestees and the title of a bestselling book about how subconscious forces affect our be ....

NEW ALBUMS
Buck Meek, “Two Saviors” (Keeled Scales)
While Adrianne Lenker is the primary creative force behind the superb Brooklyn indie band Big Thief, guitarist Buck Meek is a likewise stellar talent. Meek’s second LP arrives at a time when we could surely use the comforting salve of his splendid folk songs in an already tumultuous start to 2021.
Recorded in a Victorian house along the Mississippi River in New Orleans, Meek’s sweet vocals are tender and amiable throughout the album, and you can almost see his coy smile while listening to songs like the pedal-steel-driven “Candle” and hear the charming Southern twang in his voice on “Cannonball Pt. 2.” ....

On Drunk Tank Pink, south London post-punk group Shame come back down to earth

You’ve got to wonder where Shame find the energy. From the opening bars of “Alphabet”, where Charlie Forbes’s pummelling drums reintroduce a furious urgency, to album closer “Station Wagon”, on which frontman Charlie Steen’s guttural vocal command contends with a storm of percussion, piano and guitars, on their second record the south London post-punk band’s
stamina is unrelenting.
Drunk Tank Pink is, in many ways, a typical second rock album in that it reflects on the madness caused by the first. Shame’s 2018 debut,
Songs of Praise, written when the shouty quintet were barely out of adolescence, was critically adored, garnering them labels including “Britain’s most exciting new band”. Fans were drawn to their no-nonsense lyrics, provocative politics and, most of all, their energetic live shows, honed over years playing at the Queen’s Head in Brixton, former HQ of ramshackle rock group the Fat White Family. Shame toured hard, drank a lot o ....

Album Review: Shame - Drunk Tank Pink

7.5/10
More than half of the citizens of this planet have non-linear lives at the moment, so putting musicians on a pedestal would be the worst kind of exceptionalism.
But even with the radical changes and breaking up of many things we’d taken for granted, for London quintet Shame it’s highly likely their path into the twenties wouldn’t have been anything like orthodox anyway.
Initially part of a grubby cabal once based around the Queen’s Head pub in Brixton (now gentrified), the then precocious teenagers were taken under the wing of various members of the Fat White Family, their 2018 debut Songs Of Praise going on to please many ears. ....
